Question 1 - Past Record

For new candidates: Did you support and participate in the movement to Honour The Vote in 2016? Why?

Yes

Question 2 - Principles

Do you support Proportional Representation on principle? Why?

Yes, more democratic than FPTP

Question 3 - The Particular model

Do you support the specific Proportional Representation model that is proposed for PEI? Why?

MMP would allow for more diversity in leadership.

Question 4 - Legitimacy of the Process

Do you believe the 2019 Referendum is a more legitimate, equally legitimate, or less legitimate process than 2016's plebiscite? Why?

The 2019 Referendum is less legitimate because it is fixed by the current regime.

Questions 5 - Commitment to future action

If you are a supporter of Proportional Representation:  Regardless of the Referendum result, if a majority of MLAs were in-principle supporters of Proportional Representation, would you introduce and/or support such legislation to improve the island's electoral system?

Yes

Sarah Donald - Green

Question 1 - Past Record

For new candidates: Did you support and participate in the movement to Honour The Vote in 2016? Why?

As a new islander, I did not participate as I was still familiarizing myself with the political climate here on PEI.

Question 2 - Principles

Do you support Proportional Representation on principle? Why?

Absolutely. Under our current system, a party can win a majority without winning the majority of votes. This winner-take-all system does not reflect the wishes of the voters and can result in the winning party governing unimpeded and unchecked. Converting to proportional representation will also help to move us away from strategic voting and really make each vote count. I really like the idea of what Islanders actually vote for being represented, and the required collaboration it will bring to government.

Question 3 - The Particular model

Do you support the specific Proportional Representation model that is proposed for PEI? Why?

I think MMP is fair and it works very well in other countries. We keep part of our familiar FPTP system when electing district candidates, but have a balance of power when electing our list candidates.

Question 4 - Legitimacy of the Process

Do you believe the 2019 Referendum is a more legitimate, equally legitimate, or less legitimate process than 2016's plebiscite? Why?

The 2016 plebiscite was as legitimate as the 2019 referendum. There is some irony that the 2019 referendum will be judged using a FPTP system where districts must be won as if the "yes" and "no" options were candidates (60% of the 27 districts and the overall majority).

Questions 5 - Commitment to future action

If you are a supporter of Proportional Representation:  Regardless of the Referendum result, if a majority of MLAs were in-principle supporters of Proportional Representation, would you introduce and/or support such legislation to improve the island's electoral system?

Yes
