Question 1 - Past Record

For new candidates: Did you support and participate in the movement to Honour The Vote in 2016? Why?

I voted for Proportional Representation

Question 2 - Principles

Do you support Proportional Representation on principle? Why?

I do support proportional representation. Currently PEI has a government that had more districts allowing it to act like it has the majority of islanders support... when in reality it has a % more representative of a minority government. A system that allows individuals multiple ways to be represented is a step in the right direction. It feels right now that the 60% of residents have no say in the direction of government.

Question 3 - The Particular model

Do you support the specific Proportional Representation model that is proposed for PEI? Why?

Yes to the model proposed as movement in such a direction would allow for more adjustments in the future. However, I would also like to see an opportunity to have independents listed and an open party list as that would be a true reflection of democracy.

Question 4 - Legitimacy of the Process

Do you believe the 2019 Referendum is a more legitimate, equally legitimate, or less legitimate process than 2016's plebiscite? Why?

Equally legitimate. The first plebiscite was something MLAs could have acted on. It was a matter of how the MLAs viewed the numbers. Low turnout was a poor excuse to not see more movement, 36% worth of voters thought it was important enough to voice their opinion... Regardless for or against, almost as many people voted to legitimize an action and cast their vote as those that voted in the last election for the current government.

Questions 5 - Commitment to future action

If you are a supporter of Proportional Representation:  Regardless of the Referendum result, if a majority of MLAs were in-principle supporters of Proportional Representation, would you introduce and/or support such legislation to improve the island's electoral system?

MLAs are in place to listen and follow the direction of the voters in their district. If I were elected I would take this as a vote of confidence in my decision making and would support legislation. I believe the previous plebiscite should have resonated with those in a position to make a change (however so small), and seize the chance to fix a system that allows for the current imbalance.

Trish Altass - Green

Question 1 - Past Record

For new candidates: Did you support and participate in the movement to Honour The Vote in 2016? Why?

Yes. I believe the people of PEI voted and their choice should have been respected.

Question 2 - Principles

Do you support Proportional Representation on principle? Why?

Yes. PR will increase diversity in the legislature, and ensure that our government represents the intentions and values of all voters

Question 3 - The Particular model

Do you support the specific Proportional Representation model that is proposed for PEI? Why?

I support MMP because I believe diversity of representation will result in a more collaborative and effective legislature.

Question 4 - Legitimacy of the Process

Do you believe the 2019 Referendum is a more legitimate, equally legitimate, or less legitimate process than 2016's plebiscite? Why?

The results of the plebiscite should have been honoured. The current referendum legislation was debated in the legislature and voted on by the elected MLAs. I believe the results of the referendum must be respected.

Questions 5 - Commitment to future action

If you are a supporter of Proportional Representation:  Regardless of the Referendum result, if a majority of MLAs were in-principle supporters of Proportional Representation, would you introduce and/or support such legislation to improve the island's electoral system?

I will honour the results of the referendum, and be willing to engage in future discussions on electoral reform.
