Brad Trivers  (Incumbent) - PC

Question 1 - Past Record

For incumbent candidates: Did you Honour The Vote by supporting acceptance of the results of the plebiscite in 2016? Why?

Yes. That is what my constituents chose.

Question 2 - Principles

Do you support Proportional Representation on principle? Why?

Yes, if the people of PEI want Proportional Representation, then I support that. If implemented well, Proportional Representation should strengthen the responsibility of MLA's to support their constituents, and lessen the pressure to "tow the party line".

Question 3 - The Particular model

Do you support the specific Proportional Representation model that is proposed for PEI? Why?

In my opinion, the Dual Member Proportional (DMP) is superior to MMP. I do not like the idea of having two types of MLAs - one that campaigns for, and reports directly to specific constituents (district seats), and one that reports to the party and Island as a whole (regional seats). I believe the day-to-day activities of the district MLA will be much different then that of the regional MLA (e.g. constituent-specific issues vs. Island-wide issues). Also, it is unclear to me how a regional MLA would campaign (assuming they are not also running as a district MLA).

Question 4 - Legitimacy of the Process

Do you believe the 2019 Referendum is a more legitimate, equally legitimate, or less legitimate process than 2016's plebiscite? Why?

Both are equally "legitimate", but are two different tools of democracy. Referendums are binding, whereas plebiscites are not.

Questions 5 - Commitment to future action

If you are a supporter of Proportional Representation:  Regardless of the Referendum result, if a majority of MLAs were in-principle supporters of Proportional Representation, would you introduce and/or support such legislation to improve the island's electoral system?

Yes - if that was the will of my constituents. I believe in democracy, and that MLAs must be accountable to their constituents first.

Sandy MacKay - Liberal

Question 1 - Past Record

For new candidates: Did you support and participate in the movement to Honour The Vote in 2016? Why?

Yes. The vote was a majority - should have been accepted. 30% can elect an MLA.

Question 2 - Principles

Do you support Proportional Representation on principle? Why?

Yes. Proportional Representation creates a better balance in the legislature. Government should reflect the people's wishes.

Question 3 - The Particular model

Do you support the specific Proportional Representation model that is proposed for PEI? Why?

Yes I do because this is the model we are dealing with in the Referendum

Question 4 - Legitimacy of the Process

Do you believe the 2019 Referendum is a more legitimate, equally legitimate, or less legitimate process than 2016's plebiscite? Why?

Both are equally legitimate, because they were both passed by the legislature and became law.

Questions 5 - Commitment to future action

If you are a supporter of Proportional Representation:  Regardless of the Referendum result, if a majority of MLAs were in-principle supporters of Proportional Representation, would you introduce and/or support such legislation to improve the island's electoral system?

If the vote is close - around 50% - a committee should be struck to explore how the Referendum was run and what is best for the electorate.

Colin Jeffrey - Green

Question 1 - Past Record

For new candidates: Did you support and participate in the movement to Honour The Vote in 2016? Why?

I did not directly participate in the movement to honour the vote in 2016, simply due to a lack of time because of work and involvement with other volunteer activities. However, I voted in the original plebiscite and support what this movement accomplished.

Question 2 - Principles

Do you support Proportional Representation on principle? Why?

I support the principle of Proportional Representation since it is a fairer voting system than First-Past-The-Post because every vote counts equally.

Question 3 - The Particular model

Do you support the specific Proportional Representation model that is proposed for PEI? Why?

I believe MMP is a good option for PEI because it will create a fair, proportional voting system where islanders still have district representation by an MLA.

Question 4 - Legitimacy of the Process

Do you believe the 2019 Referendum is a more legitimate, equally legitimate, or less legitimate process than 2016's plebiscite? Why?

While I believe that the 2019 referendum is a legitimate process, it was undemocratic of the government to ignore the results of the legitimate 2016 referendum vote.

Questions 5 - Commitment to future action

If you are a supporter of Proportional Representation:  Regardless of the Referendum result, if a majority of MLAs were in-principle supporters of Proportional Representation, would you introduce and/or support such legislation to improve the island's electoral system?

I believe that it is best for MLAs to abide by the referendum since all islanders will have a chance to indicate their choice through this process.
