IS  YOUR  MLA  A  'FRIEND OF DEMOCRACY'

On November 22, 2016, all island MLAs had a chance to vote on Motion 54, to 'Honour the Vote', upholding the clear results of the plebiscite, and calling for the next provincial election to be held under Mixed-Member Proportional Representation rules.

In the plebiscite, 52% of voters supported Mixed-Member Proportional, over only 43% supported First Past the Post, the current system.
Mixed-Member Proportional was the winner in every age group under 65, and in 22 of 27 districts across PEI.

However, only 6 MLAs voted in favour of upholding the plebiscite results. See what they said below.

The Liberal party - who holds 100% of the power in the legislature, despite gaining only 40% of the vote in the last election - chose to vote as a block, against islanders' clearly-expressed wishes.

This exemplifies the problem with our current electoral system - the very thing that islanders voted to change in the plebiscite.

The governing MacLauchlan Liberals have proposed that another electoral reform vote takes place in 2019, parallel to the next provincial election, which would still use First Past the Post: a model which had a clear minority of support in the plebiscite. This decision undermines confidence in island democracy, and deepens cynicism.

I would like to point out that you have incorrectly identified the Speaker Buck Watts as having voted on this motion . The Speaker of the Legislature has no vote unless there is a tie so your are misrepresenting the vote.

I have learned that they are all unresponsive to the will of the people. Therefore they are illegitimate to my mind. They may hold onto their precious belief in their true religion, their PARTY to which they defend and promote.

I have emailed and called Premier MacLauchlan (my MLA in District 9). His office took a message and there has otherwise been no response, but I think his public reaction is well-documented.

Richard Brown has not responded to my email message yesterday requesting that he honor the vote. ( I did request a response)

Hopefully the most recent effort by the Premier (motion to attach a referendum question to the 2019 Provincial Election ballot) will make many more people see that the Premier will go to any lengths to block democratic voice. It’s all about the belief in, and worship of, absolute power. Enough Already!!

Richard Brown has refused to answer my letter and my tweets. Complete silence not even an acknowledgement of receipt.
